FIFA vs Iran

LONDON (Reuters) - Iran were warned about dress code rules which led to their women's team being banned from an Olympic qualifying match last week, soccer's world governing body FIFA said on Monday.

Iran had said it would complain to FIFA after the women's team were stopped from playing a second-round qualifier for next year's London Olympics because of their full-body strip, which includes a head scarf and conforms to the Islamic dress code.

Opponents Jordan were awarded a 3-0 win and Iranian officials said the decision could cost them a place in the 2012 Games.

FIFA said both teams had been reminded before Friday's match about its rules and that, as a result, Jordan had decided not to select several players.

"FIFA's decision in March 2010 which permitted that players be allowed to wear a cap that covers their head to the hairline, but does not extend below the ears to cover the neck, was still applicable," FIFA said in an e-mail to Reuters.

"Despite initial assurances that the Iranian delegation understood this, the players came out wearing the hijab, and the head and neck totally covered, which was an infringement of the Laws of the Game.

"The match commissioner and match referee therefore decided to apply correctly the Laws of the Game, which ended in the match being abandoned."

The rules are the rules.

Iran wants ‘Islamic soccer’

Ahmadinejad slams ‘dictators, colonialists’ over ban on Islamic dress for female soccer players

Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lashed out against the FIFA international soccer association after it banned the Iranian women’s national team from an Olympic qualifier because of its insistence on Islamic dress, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Thursday.

"These are the dictators and colonialists who want to impose their lifestyle on others," Ahmadinejad said in a news conference, after Iranian players insisted on playing while wearing a hijab, thereby forfeiting their recent match against Jordan.
Oh the irony.
"We will deal with those who carried out this ugly job,” Ahmadinejad said.

FIFA argued on Monday that Muslim women are allowed to wear "a cap that covers their head to the hairline, but which does not extend below the ears to cover the neck.”

FARE argues the issue goes further, Powar continued, “The rules fly in the face of FIFA’s own objective of growing football in developing countries, and for those of us living in European states, the cause of using sport to increase social cohesion. Other religious minorities will also be affected by the ban, Sikh’s or Rastafarians who wish to wear turbans or head-coverings will find themselves breaking the rules of the game.

“The situation that is clearly not acceptable, FIFA need to undertake a full review of the rule, consider the contradictions and seek to amend it as a matter of urgency.”
FARE

Good old FARE, trying to make sure that people from different backgrounds are treated differently and then calling that anti-racist work.

An Iranian photojournalist and women's rights activist who campaigned for female football fans to be allowed to enter stadiums has disappeared.

Maryam Majd, 25, is feared to have been held by security officials before boarding a flight from Tehran to Düsseldorf, Germany, where she intended to cover the Fifa Women's World Cup.

Petra Landers, a former German national footballer who had invited Majd to join her in a book project about women's sport, said she has not heard from her since Friday when the photographer was scheduled to arrive in Düsseldorf.

"I waited for hours in the airport but eventually found that she was not on the plane at the first place," Landers told the Guardian. "The last time I talked to her she was in the airport in Tehran waiting to board the plane and I have not been able to contact her nor her family since then."

Majd specialised in sports photography, although her pictures of female athletes were usually censored in the official media.

July 5 - Muslim women were given a "100 per cent guarantee" by the game's lawmakers today that they are now free to wear the hijab at senior competitive level.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), meeting here, said all medical objections to women wearing a specially designed Islamic headscarf had been removed – a huge relief to FIFA's Asian vice-president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, the modernist who has led a tireless campaign to overturn the ban on the hijab.

Well done FARE, changing the rules of the game to indulge extremist religious doctrine really is emancipatory!

Call me a cynic, but...
Middle Eastern soccer associations have launched a campaign to put women’s football on par with men’s football in a region in which woman’s rights to play and pursue an athletic careers have been controversial.
A statement at the end of the seminar chaired by FIFA Vice President and AFDP Chairman Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein defined “an athletic woman” as “an empowered woman who further empowers her community.”

"I am confident our discussions will enable us to make concrete recommendations for the next steps for the way forward for women’s football in our region. We have a lot of potential, let us make it happen", Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein also explained.
